2010 National Prayer Breakfast: Hillary, Mother Teresa and seeing the face of God

Last week, BDF senior counsel Dorinda Bordlee attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. at the invitation of pro-life Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA).  The highlight of the morning was Dorinda’s opportunity to meet Tim Tebow, who had delivered the closing prayer, and to thank him on behalf of Bioethics Defense Fund for his pro-life witness in the Focus on the Family Super Bowl ad campaign.

We learned that morning that the keynote speaker was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  In her address, Mrs. Clinton reminisced about the 1994 prayer breakfast that she attended as First Lady when the keynote speaker was Mother Teresa:

She gave, as everyone who remembers that occasion will certainly recall, a strong address against abortion. And then she asked to see me. And I thought, “Oh, dear.” And after the breakfast, we went behind that curtain and we sat on folding chairs. . . . We began to talk, and she told me that she knew that we had a shared conviction about adoption being vastly better as a choice for unplanned or unwanted babies. And she asked me – or more properly, she directed me – to work with her to create a home for such babies here in Washington. . . . But that day, I felt like I had been ordered, and that the message was coming not just through this diminutive woman but from someplace far beyond.”  Read the full address here.

President Obama then delivered his eloquent yet ironic remarks.  The President spoke of Dr. Martin Luther King, stating how even “[i]n the eyes of those who denied his humanity, he saw the face of God.”  The President spoke of Abraham Lincoln, observing that “[e]ven in the eyes of the confederate soldiers, he saw the face of God.”

President Obama closed by stating, “Progress comes when we look into the eyes of another and see the face of God.  That we might do so – that we will do so all the time, not just some of the time – is my fervent prayer for our nation and the world.”

Amen.  And let us sincerely pray together that the President himself may come to look into the eyes of unborn children and their frightened mothers, and see the face of God — all of the time, not just some of the time.
